How common is schizophrenia?

I have a family member who suffers from what the doctor refers to as "mild schizophrenia" which means all the signs/symptoms aren't there to be considered to have the disorder to the full extent. I never knew anyone personally to have this other than my family member so I am wondering how common it is.

Re: How common is schizophrenia?

Well, 24 million people worldwide have been diagnosed with it which translates to 1 in every 100 people. That is quite common and it is something I don't think enough people are aware of. Some people can be schizophrenia and not be on medication, doing just fine while others require it in order to be a part of a public society.
